01 / Inspectable matching

A reason beside every file.

An ordered confidence label is not a probability. AppUnwind records which exact signal matched and which safety rule changed the decision.

Certain · selected

com.acme.studio

Exact bundle identifier boundary plus matching container metadata.

Strong · selected

Acme Studio

App-name boundary plus a reviewed Homebrew Cask path rule.

Possible · excluded

Studio Notes

Only a loose name heuristic matched. Review before including.

02 / Shared-file firewall

Positive matches do not outrank protection.

Sibling apps, a different signing team, symbolic links, system roots, and vendor-supported product classes fail closed.

Shared files stay protected

Another installed app uses this vendor resource.

  • Used by sibling app
  • Shared vendor root
  • Apple system apps display only
  • Identity checked again before a move

03 / Reversible by default

Move first. Verify. Keep the receipt.

Same-volume items move into quarantine. Cross-volume copies must match their SHA-256 digest before the source is removed.

  1. 01
    Identity locked

    Bundle and signing identity captured.

  2. 02
    Approved items quarantined

Source preserved until any copy verifies.

  3. 03
    Canonical receipt written

Every move, skip, exclusion, and failure.

  4. Undo
    Restore without overwriting

Newer conflicts wait for your decision.

Undo without an account

A safety net that stays on your Mac.

Restore works without a network connection. A newer item at the original path is never overwritten automatically.

  • Original paths stay in the receipt
  • Incomplete records never auto-expire
  • Conflicts stay excluded

Full Disk Access, explained

More visibility. The same safety rules.

AppUnwind works in limited mode and names locations it could not inspect. Full Disk Access expands coverage; it never makes a shared or protected file selectable by default.

Capability, not a promise

Readable user and system Library locations are listed. Root-owned items may still require the supported vendor workflow.

Plain answers

Before you grant access.

Does AppUnwind delete everything it finds?

No. Certain and strong candidates may start selected; possible and shared items start excluded. You review the final plan before anything moves.

Does it bypass vendor protection?

No. VPNs, endpoint security, drivers, system extensions, tamper-protected products, and root-owned components are sent to a supported vendor workflow.

Is the quarantine a permanent deletion feature?

No. It is recoverable local storage with a receipt. The receipt records a retention target, but version 1.0 performs no automatic deletion and makes no irreversible deletion claim.

Why direct distribution?

A sandboxed Mac App Store utility cannot honestly inspect and move another app’s support files. Direct distribution still requires Developer ID signing, Apple notarization, and Gatekeeper verification.
